Many interior decorators will tell you that shelves are cheaper to build that drawers. Thisis true but the downside is that it becomes harder to access many items in your kitchen that are kept towards th eback of your shelves. An easy thumb rule to follow is to have shelves above the counter and drawers under the counter. Do not build shelves above the counters at such a height that your are unable to reach them.
Shelves should optimally have a depth of around 12 inches. If it is any deeper, you will again not be able to reach items you stock towards the back. You can have wider shelves suspended from the ceiling over the island in the kitchen.
