Bathroom Details Basins

Basin widths vary from about 30cms for a cloakroom model to a massive 100cms for a trough that you'd like as your accent piece or what architects know as the focal point, A regular bathroom basin is about 45cms to 60cms. This should be sufficient for most purposes. Where the space is cramped, what you'll also need to keep in mind is the projection of the basin i.e. how much it juts out of the wall. A large basin may project around 60cms into the room while a compact one will do it in 40cms or even less - but if you want something smaller, consider a tiny hand-rinse basin that would occupy only about 23 cms.

Apart from the usual suspects - shape, size and material - there is one other important factor to consider. The mounting, the style and space in the bathroom should in effect influence this decision. There are essentially three types of mountings for a wash basin: a. Counter mounted: Where the counter could be a piece of furniture, a freestanding bureau or even a cantilvered shelf. This one works if you want storage space under your basin and would like the pipe work hidden. b. On a Pedestal: Where the bowl of the basin sits put on pedestal that not only hides the pipe work, it also supports the weight of the bowl comfortable. c. Wall Mounted: Besides being a trend these days, this one doesn't really serve much of purpose, as the pipe work remains exposed and there is no storage solution available. This may not work too well for you if the basin you have chosen is very large.
