IGCAR finalises design of commercial FBRs

Mumbai : Scientists from Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) have finalised the design features of the commercial Fast Breeder Reactors (FBR) which are to be constructed at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, a top scientist said.

"A conceptual design of twin unit (2x500 MW) of commercial FBR to be constructed at Kalpakkam has been finalised and thus a road map has been established to enhance the safety features of future fast reactors with economical aspects also in mind," IGCAR Director S C Chetal said.

The layout of component handling equipment in the fuel and decontamination buildings has been arrived at and most of the equipments in the fuel and decontamination buildings are being shared between the twin units resulting in improved economy, Chetal said.
