Tata Steel has launched a 5-ton-per-day (TPD) carbon capture plant at its Jamshedpur Works, making it the first steel company in the country to do so. The plant extracts carbon directly from blast furnace gas.
To promote a circular carbon economy, Tata Steel will reuse the carbon captured on site. The facility will help reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1,500 tons per year.
TV Narendran, CEO and MD of Tata Steel, said the company has taken the strategic step to gradually decarbonise the steel industry.
The Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) facility uses amine-based technology to capture carbon and make it available for on-site reuse.
