In response to a petition challenging the new property tax system, the Andhra Pradesh Supreme Court has sent notices to the state government.
The Taxpayers' Association has filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court against the new property tax regime, which imposes a tax on the asset's asset value rather than annual rental income.
The government recently issued GO 198, which mandates the implementation of a new regime of property taxes and vacancy in urban local governments. On behalf of the petitioners, lawyer Sunkara Rajendra Prasad told a bank headed by Chief Justice Arup Kumar Goswami and Judge Ninala Jayasurya that Andhra Pradesh's amended municipal law was unconstitutional and undemocratic.
