Aditya Birla Group is likely to set up a paint production unit in West Bengal for an investment of Rs 1,000 crore, and the project will be commissioned within two years.
Officials told media that the group expressed interest in setting up a paint factory in West Bengal in a letter to CM Mamata Banerjee, then three group representatives met the chief secretary, HK Dwivedi, on Thursday.
Officials said the company had applied for land allocation for a decorative painting unit on an 80-acre site in Vidyasagar Park in Kharagpur.
According to a state government official, the paint production unit will employ 600 people and the government will create indirect employment for 1,500 people.
West Bengal Industry Minister Parth Chatterjee said it is a good sign that industrialization is picking up in the state under Mamata Banerjee's leadership.
He said the newly formed investment promotion council would help better coordination between departments and boost the pace of industrialization.
