The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has approved the cluster redevelopment of the old Chikhalwadi chawl in Tardeo in south Mumbai.
It is spread over a 1.54 hectare plot, with over 200 people living in it. The chawl will make way for a 36-storey tower.
The redevelopment has been underway since 2002 and recently received approval from a powerful panel appointed by the state. The difficulty, according to the officials, is the redevelopment of the 18-meter-wide cluster along the road around the plot.
The developers had requested permission to allow redevelopment with a 12-meter wide road, and the state government approved the permission in July.
