The two mines of Ramco Cements viz. Melavenkateswarapuram Limestone Mine, RR Nagar and Pudupalayam & Periyangalur Limestone Mine, Ariyalur received the FIVE STAR award at the 5th National Conclave on Mines & minerals. The conclave under the auspices of the Ministry of Mines, the Government of India and the Indian Bureau of Mines took place on November 23, 2021 in New Delhi.
1,029 mines across the country had submitted an online self-assessment and were validated for the FIVE STAR category award by the Indian Bureau of Mines for the year 2019-20. Of these, only 40 mines (various metals and minerals) received the FIVE STAR award.
The awards were presented by Prahlad Joshi, Minister of Coal & Mines & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India.
The award for Melavenkateswarapuram Limestone Mine, RR Nagar was received by S Ramalingam, SVP (Mfg) and P Jagadish Babu, General Manager (Mines). The award for Pudupalayam & Periyalangalur Limestone Mine, Ariyalur was received by Madhusudhan Kulkarni, VP (Works) and GR Magesh, General Manager (Mines).
The award recognizes the contribution of various Mine Owners to conducting scientific and systematic mining; progress in the gradual and permanent closure of mines; addressing resettlement and rehabilitation issues, local community activities and welfare programs; implementation of green energy source, cleanliness drive and mining software. It also acknowledges taking all necessary precautions to undertake sustainable mining and to monitor mining and related activities according to the notified STAR classification template in the prescribed format issued by IBM.
The Pudupalayam & Periyalangalur Limestone Mine, Ariyalur had previously won the award in 2017-18 & 2018-19. Ramco Cements is the only company in the entire state of Tamil Nadu to receive this prestigious award for the year 2019-20.
