On Wednesday, Gujarat's high court approved the ambitious Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Project by discarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) registered by Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson, Tushar Gandhi, and challenging the project.
The court scrapped the PIL by registering the state government's statement that it will not hit the original Gandhi Ashram, the museum and the Magan Niwas (home of Maganlal, Gandhi's nephew and ardent follower), located in the one-acre area while it the adjacent 55 hectares of land.
Attorney General Kamal Trivedi has told the court that the impression has been created in the media that an amusement park is being built in the name of the project. But the state government has no such plan and the project will preserve Gandhiji's values and ethos.
Everything will be done according to the Gandhian philosophy and the Gandhi Ashram, the museum and Magan Niwas will remain untouched. Only the adjacent 55-hectare area is being improved. There are 46 old houses in deteriorated condition, which will be rebuilt. They plan to develop sidewalks with lots of greenery.
The state government had announced a resolution on March 5, 2021 to develop a Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Project at the Sabarmati Ashram site for Rs 1,200 crore. The project envisaged the development of the ashram in a space of 55 hectares.
Gandhi's lawyer Bhushan Oza had claimed that the project would change the character of the historic monument. The plea also raised concerns about the idea of attracting tourists who are not interested in the history of India's freedom struggle.
But the state government dismissed all questions raised and the court did not consider the petition. But the court clarified that the people living in the Ashram could approach the civil court against their evacuation.
