Mumbai Police issued an order on Friday banning people from visiting beaches, open areas, seascapes, boardwalks, gardens, parks or similar public places between 5pm and 5am until January 15, given the prevailing coronavirus situation and the rise of the Omicron variant.
DCP (operations) S Chaitanya has issued the order under Article 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which came into effect from 1 p.m. Friday and will be in effect until January 15, unless revoked earlier.
“The city continues to be threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic. In view of the increase in the number of cases and the emergence of the new Omicron variant, and in view of the prevention of danger to the life, health and safety of people and to reduce the transmission of the virus, people are prohibited from visiting beaches, open areas, seascapes, boardwalks, gardens, parks or similar public places from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following day," the order reads.
In the case of weddings, both in closed and open spaces, the maximum number of attendees is limited to 50 people, according to the order.
"In the event of any gathering or program, whether it be social, cultural, political or religious, whether it be in closed or open spaces, the maximum number of attendees will be limited to 50 people," it said.
At the last rites, only 20 people are allowed to stay.
Those who disobey the order will be punished under Section 188 of the IPC, in addition to criminal provisions under the Epidemic Diseases Act and the National Disaster Management Act, the DCP said in the order.
The city police directive came after the Maharashtra government issued new guidelines on Thursday evening to limit the number of those attending meetings in open or closed spaces to 50, following an increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the state.
Previously, no more than 100 people in enclosed spaces and 250 people in open spaces were allowed to attend a wedding ceremony or social, cultural, political and religious gathering.
