As the state stands on the brink of a 'third wave' of Covid-19, many school and junior college children aged 15-18 eagerly burst into vaccination centers to get their shots in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra , officials here said on Monday.
In accordance with the policy of the Centre, the government has launched the vaccination campaign for the age groups of 15-18 years and more than 8,000,000 have already registered for their dose in recent days.
Since dawn, the children, many in their school uniforms, lugging school bags, clutching their I-cards and other necessary documents, went to the vaccination centers in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and other towns, villages and cities.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray urged children to get their dose, while VIPs were waiting in many centers to welcome the children, such as Health Minister Rajesh Tope in Jalna, Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray and Mayor Kishori Pednekar in Mumbai, other ministers in other districts, parliamentarians or legislators in various fields.
Some major schools in urban centers have decided to organize the vaccination campaign on their own campuses to ensure that all children in the 15-18 age group are covered.
In several centers, excited and giggling young boys and girls arrived with their family or neighbors or friends eagerly awaiting the experience of a Covid-19 dose, urging their reluctant friends or classmates to join them.
“There is concern among us as Covid-19 and Omicron cases have suddenly increased… We have all followed the advice of our parents and teachers to register and take the precautionary jab when called,” said Manthan Joshi , an SSC student from Gokhale High School in Borivali.
In Mumbai, the doses are administered at the 9 Jumbo vaccination centers in the city and suburbs. They are the Richardson & Cruddas, Byculla and Mulund, Somaiya Grounds, Sion, NSCI Dome, Crompton & Greaves, Kanjurmarg, Worli, NESCO Center Goregaon, Malad Centre, Malad and Dahisar Centre, Dahisar.
