The central government has approved a central sector umbrella scheme of Rs 13,020 crore for the continuation of the border infrastructure and management (BIM) during the 15th cycle of the finance commission from 2021-22 to 2025-26.
The decision will strengthen infrastructure to improve border management, policing and surveillance, according to an official statement.
The government of Narendra Modi has supported the continuation of the central sector umbrella program of BIM during the 15th cycle of the finance commission from 2021-22 to 2025-26, for Rs.13,020 crore, it said.
The Interior Ministry, led by Interior Minister Amit Shah, is committed to improving border infrastructure and management.
The BIM scheme will help develop infrastructures such as border fences, technological solutions, border floodlights, border roads and border posts (BOPs) and corporate operational bases to safeguard India's borders with Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar.
India's border with Pakistan is 3,323 km long and includes approximately 775 km of the Line of Control (LoC). The length of the border is 4,096 km with Bangladesh, 3,488 km with China, 1,751 km with Nepal, 699 km with Bhutan, 1,643 km with Myanmar.
Officials said that as part of its strategy to secure the borders and also to develop infrastructure in the country's border regions, the government has taken many initiatives that will promote rapid development of fences, floodlights and roads along the borders with Bangladesh, Pakistan and include Myanmar. and development of strategic roads along the borders with Nepal, Bhutan and China.
The government has also deployed hi-tech electronic surveillance equipment at international borders and built additional BOPs.
