South Delhi Municipal Corporation has opened its first engineering laboratory for testing materials used in construction and road works.
RK Puram's lab can also be used by other bodies, even after ISO certification. Built for Rs 1.7 crore and equipped with equipment costing Rs 1.2 crore, the laboratory complex occupies an area of 1200 sqm and has testing facilities for cement and aggregates, steel reinforcing bars, water for construction, bitumen for road works, bricks and soil, tiles, concrete and precast concrete, flat doors and paint.
Although the complex was developed some time ago and staff were selected for the lab, they were unable to set up modern equipment due to lack of funds, Colonel BK Oberoi (retd), chairman of SDMC's standing committee, said. Currently, they have been able to equip the lab with state-of-the-art digital machines and many other equipment.
The chairman went on to say that they either sent test samples of materials used by contractors to the laboratory of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
The public authorities also consulted the Sri Ram Institute of Industrial Research, near Delhi University, on certain occasions. But in order to save costs and time, it was decided in 2015 to set up their laboratory where we could perform tests at any time. Oberoi said the quality of work and the longevity of the projects developed depended on the cement and aggregates, steel reinforcing bars, bitumen, bricks and even the water used for construction, telling the media it was relevant to to test such material. For example, if the cement is more than a year old, the strength decreases by 50%. It is the same with many other materials. The technical laboratory will charge other agencies for the use of its test facilities. This effort will generate revenue for SDMC. After the successful rollout of the lab, they will strive for ISO certification, according to an SDMC authority.
