After the inauguration of the Pune metro in Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the central government is focusing on improving mass transportation, including metro connectivity.
The total cost of the Pune metro project is more than Rs 11,400 crore. PM Modi had laid the foundation stone for the project on December 24, 2016.
PM Modi addressed a public meeting at MIT College following the launch and foundation stone laying of several development projects in the city.
He said the inauguration of the Pune metro project shows and sends a message that projects can be completed on time and called on people to use metro trains to travel.
He added that urbanization is happening at a rapid pace across the country. The country's urban population will exceed the 60 crore mark by 2030.
The increasing population brings many opportunities but also challenges. In addition, the government attaches more importance to improving public transport and the metro connection in all cities.
PM Modi had inaugurated the Pune metro rail project and took a train ride after buying a ticket from a newsagent.
The opening ceremony of the 12 km stretch of the total project of 32.2 km took place at the Garware metro station. PM Modi had flagged the metro project and continued by metro to Anandnagar station.
The 12 km route was inaugurated, which includes two priority stretches, Garware College to Vanaz and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to Phugewadi on two metro lines.
