The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is reviving their earlier plan to set up a metro line to connect Mumbai to Navi Mumbai via the Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL), which is under construction.
The 22 km MTHL will connect Sewri to Nhava Sheva and is expected to be completed in 2023 and about 50% of the work has been completed. The MMRDA has appointed an advisor to investigate whether the sea bridge will bear the burden of a Metro corridor. This report will be ready in April 2022.
In 2010, MMRDA prepared a detailed project report (DPR) through Rail India Technical and Economic Service Limited (RITES) named Mumbai Trans Harbor Metro Rail Link, 49 km corridor from Prabhadevi to Dushmi (20 km from Chirle), and where the MTHL ends in Raigad district.
The purpose of building an MTHL subway was to encourage mass transit while meeting future travel needs and easing congestion of MTHL traffic. But since the project would later be built on the public-private partnership (PPP) model, the companies were not interested in a metro corridor, saying it would not be financially viable as citizens would prefer the metro over the toll payment. for the use of the road bridge.
After no response was received in 2015, the MMRDA made the decision to build the project through self-financing through a loan approval from Japan's International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
