According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), construction of the 10.58km Mumbai Coastal Road project is expected to be completed by November 2023.
When completed, it will add an 8.5 km long and 20 m wide sea promenade in Mumbai between Priyadarshini Park on Napean Sea Road and the Worli side of the Bandra Worli Sea Link.
Chandradhar Kandalkar, responsible for the project, said more than 50% of the project work has been completed and construction works are on track.
According to the officials, Sea Promenade will include a butterfly garden and a biodiversity park to the city, and an underground parking garage with 1,864 vehicles providing capacity.
Of the 111 hectares of land reclamation, 70 hectares or 63.6% will be used for the development of recreational spaces and facilities. About 26.5 hectares or 23.88% will be used for the construction of interchanges and 14.5 hectares or 13.6% will be used to build a sea wall to protect the area from sea waves.
Currently, Marine Drive is the longest seafront promenade at 3.5 km. The sea promenade created as part of the Kustweg project will be more than double this length and 20 m wide. Native trees should be planted along the walkway to attract tourists. Other amenities include bike paths, open theaters, parks and playgrounds, and public restrooms.
As part of the project, Monopile technology will be used in place of multiple foundations for the construction of the bridge and coastal road. According to the officials, this technology will be used for the first time in India. Some 176 single piers will be built using monopile technology, with a single column running from the bottom to the top of the pier.
