All decks have been released under Prime Minister Gati Shakti to revive the stalled Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Elevated Expressway for strengthening Chennai's infrastructure.
The 20.6 km double-decker elevated corridor will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 5,770 crore.
State Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan told media that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be signed between the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Government of Tamil Nadu, the Navy and the Port of Chennai for the implementation of the Maduravoyal-Chennai Port Elevated Hall.
He said the government is committed to reviving and implementing the Maduravoyal-Chennai Port Elevated Corridor project, which is vital for Chennai's commercial development and infrastructure. A detailed project report (DPR) is prepared by NHAI.
In an event of the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Paliwal said the two-layer elevated corridor is designed to have two lanes of traffic in each layer, carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
The Maduravoyal-Chennai elevated corridor will be connected to the under construction Bangalore-Chennai Expressway by a 22 km causeway that runs along Poonamallee High Road from Sriperumbudur in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.
The central government's two weapons, Chennai Port Trust (CPT) and the Indian Navy, have agreed to enter into a land swap deal.
Under the agreement, the Indian Navy will provide CRT 1.09 lakh sq ft of land in exchange for an equivalent area closer to the port border at INS Adyar.
A total of 64 homes will be built on the plot made available by the CPT. After identifying the land for the construction of houses for the navy, the project was given further impetus.
The Ministry of Shipping has granted the main approval based on a Certification of No Objection (NOC) issued by the Indian Navy in Chennai. The Indian Navy also received approval from the Ministry of Defense (MoD).
