Ambuja Cements Ltd, a member of the Holcim Group, is ranked 5th on the 2021 Capri Global Capital Hurun India Impact 50, a list of the 50 largest companies headquartered in India.
Ambuja Cements was ranked based on alignment with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This ranking acts as a recognition of the company's impactful work to build a more sustainable future and set higher standards in the Indian cement industry.
Capri Global Capital Hurun India Impact 50 2021 award also underlined Ambuja Cements' efforts in three key UN SDGs, namely Clean Water & Sanitation, sustainable cities and communities.
Ambuja Cements has joined the Net Zero plan and sustainability plan of parent company Holcim. The company has developed 2030 carbon reduction targets validated by Science-Based Target Initiatives (SBTi), and has partnered with the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), India's SBTi Incubator Program, to develop a ​step-by-step plan for decarbonisation.
Neeraj Akhoury, CEO of Holcim India and General Manager & CEO, of Ambuja Cements, told the media that mainstreaming sustainability is the most important affirmative step of the global cement industry. The company's sustainability plan and roadmap to achieve Net Zero align closely with Holcim's commitment to become a carbon neutral company by 2050, which will be calculated against clearly defined, science-based targets.
Ambuja Cements is also making clean energy efforts, such as the waste heat recovery system to reduce the clinker factor, energy efficiency (thermal and electrical) and the use of renewable energy from waste-derived resources or alternative fuels, the fuel composition and capture of optimize rainwater.
The company is working with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to create green products such as limestone, calcined clay cement, which can further reduce its carbon footprint. The company was the first cement company in the world to be placed on the CDP 2021 'A' list for water safety.
Ambuja Cements has also led to a growth in the use of waste-derived resources such as fly ash and slag in cement production.
