World’s largest renewable energy generation, Storage Project in Andhra Pradesh

Kurnool : Hyderabad-based renewable energy player Greenko Group has set the ball rolling for the construction of the world’s largest and first-of-its-kind single location, integrated renewable energy storage project (IRESP).
The project at Gummitham Tanda in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh will be completed by 2023 at an investment of $3 billion.
The 5,230 MW project, which combines 3,000 MW of solar, 550 MW of wind and 1,680 MW of hydro power generation, will have a pumped storage capacity of 10,800 MWh per day (at six hours of hydel power pumping daily) and in future will also produce green hydrogen and green ammonia. The project will be spread over 15,000 acres. This includes a $1 billion investment in creating the RE storage capacity and the remaining $2 billion in setting up the solar, wind and hydro power generation capacities, Mahesh Kolli, founder & joint managing director, Greenko Group, said on Tuesday.
Pointing out that this project would play a key role in helping India achieve energy security and enabling global energy transition to greener sources, Kolli said it was part of the Greenko Group’s plans to to build an intelligent, lowcost energy cloud storage platform of 50GWh capacity that it plans to commission by 2025.
For this, the company is also taking up similarly sized RE storage projects in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh and one of 17,000 MWh in Rajasthan by 2025 at a total investment of $5 billion in just creating storage capacities across the four projects.
According to Kolli, the larger plan is to target 100GWh RE storage capacities by 2027, by taking up another four projects in states such as Telangana, along with green hydrogen production systems of 10GW by 2030.
At Kurnool, the 10,800 MWh storage capacity will be able to integrate up to 6GW of wind and solar capacities, which means the project will have the capacity to integrate another 2,500MW of solar and wind generation capacities in addition to the 3,550MW of wind and solar capacities planned currently, Greenko officials said. AP CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who kicked off the project construction with the first concrete pour, said AP was creating history with this project.
