The government's proposal to auction the assets of the Cement Corporation of India (CCI) unit in Adilabad in Telangana has sparked a political controversy, bringing together the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Congress and left-wing parties to criticize the action and demand that the Center revive the unit rather than dismantle it.
Spread over 772 acres, the unit was shut down in 2008 after suffering heavy losses.
On Wednesday, TRS Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) K Kavitha, the daughter of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, urged the Center to reverse the auction proposal.
The Center should consider revoking the decision as the action will harm thousands of families who depend on it.
The bid was made for the Adilabad plant, along with an offer for two Chhattisgarh plants, one each from Madya Pradesh and Karnataka.
Kavita said the Center should respond if it continues to reinvest the funds in Telangana or set up new factories to create jobs.
She also asked whether the BJP government would grant national status to state-funded irrigation projects or install Kazipet Coach Factory and educational institutions with the funds they are trying to consolidate through the sale of national assets.
Kavita said the state's BJP leaders are accountable to the people of Telangana over the auction of CCI's Adilabad unit, the privatization of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd and the sale of national assets.
Telangana's IT and Industry Minister KT Rama Rao urged Trade and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to review the proposal and revive the unit. Rao said the state government would provide financial incentives if the unit is revived, which could create jobs. Electricity and plenty of water were available, and the unit can be revived.
S Vikas, secretary of the CCI Employees Association, told media that a court order had been issued against the auction of CCI assets and its dismantling.
