The Ministry of Coal expects the operationalization of 58 coal blocks in 2022-23 and has set a target of 138.28 million tons (mt) of coal production.
The ministry has allocated coal blocks for internal end use and for the sale of coal for commercial mining. In FY21-22 approximately 85.32 mt of coal had been produced from 47 operational coal blocks, against the planned production of 203.67 mt for FY22-23. A total of 58 coal blocks would become operational with an expected production capacity of approximately 138.28 mt.
The ministry said that warnings are issued from time to time to companies that fail to meet the deadlines under the agreements for making coal blocks operational or failing to meet the target coal production.
