Coal production in India increased by 33.88% in May 2022 to 71.30 million tons (mt).
According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Coal, coal production in the corresponding month of the last fiscal year was 53.25 million tons.
Of the 37 largest coal-producing mines, 23 produced more than 100%, while 10 mines performed between 80% and 100%.
Thermal power generation increased by 26.18% in May compared to the corresponding month of the last fiscal year.
In May 2022, total power generation was 23.32% higher than in April 2021 and 2.63% higher than power production in April 2022.
In May, coal-based electricity production declined 3.82% to 98,609 million units (MU) from 1,02,529 MU in April 2022.
However, total electricity production grew to 1.40,059 MU in May, compared to 1.36,465 MU in April 2022 due to wind and hydro power.
