The Union Ministry of Coal has asked the World Bank and other global institutions for help in reusing the abandoned coal mines to make them ecologically stable and suitable for commercial purposes.
Indian officials are trying to make more coal available for power plants as shortages in the July-September quarter will be greater than initially estimated on expectations that electricity demand will increase.
An unrelated report says the Ministry of Energy has dispatched officials from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) to visit the mines of Coal India (CIL) and take on the task of distributing fuel to power plants.
