JSW Steel has allocated Rs 100 billion to boost the use of renewable energy to replace thermal energy and other green efforts to minimize their carbon footprint. Coal is used by some steel manufacturers to generate thermal energy for internal use. Globally, the iron and steel sector contributes to about 8 percent of total CO2 emissions.
It accounts for 12 percent of India's total CO2 emissions. As a result, given the commitments made at the COP26 climate change conference, the Indian steel sector must significantly reduce its emissions. According to reports, JSW Steel has already signed a contract for 1 gigatonne (GW) of renewable energy, of which 225 MW will become operational in April 2022, with the rest to be commissioned in phases.
