The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has forecast that after the next four years, Nepal will export 2,456.4 MW of electricity to India in the peak production season, provided that all hydroelectricity projects in the pipeline complete their construction work within the prescribed timeline.
At present, India has authorized Nepal to sell 364 MW of electricity in the Indian market. In the context of producing 2,190 MW while domestic demand accounts for around 1,700 MW, the landlocked country has faced a waste of its produced energy.
However, NEA has estimated that the country will sell 613.4 MW of electricity in the upcoming rainy season. The amount is estimated to double to 1,296 MW in 2023/24, then to 1,831.6 MW in 2024/25 and finally to 2,456.4 MW in 2025/26.
According to the government's forecast, Nepal's electricity production will reach 3000 MW by the end of this fiscal year. Likewise, electricity projects totaling 3,289 MW are under construction. The state power company estimates that due to adequate energy production even during the dry season, Nepal will not need to import electricity from India after fiscal year 2026/2027.
