Under the new renewable energy (RE) mandate, states should meet a quarter of their energy demand from renewable energy sources (RE) and increase it to 43% by the end of this decade. The new set of targets includes for the first time solar, wind, hydro, and also energy storage that states are required to purchase.
The strict targets come in the wake of India, which pledged an ambitious 500 gigawatts (GW) to RE by 2030 at the climate summit in Glasgow last year. are also proposed penal provisions for states that fail to meet their RPO targets.
