Twelve new steel plants would soon be built in the state, the state government told the Assembly. in response to a question from Druba Steel and Mines Minister Prafulla Mallick, BJD Representative Charan Sahu told the state that the state currently has 51 steel plants with a combined annual production capacity of 33.12 million tons, and another 12 plants with a combined annual production capacity of 60.4 million tons (MTPA) are in the planning stage. JSW Utkal Steel plans to be one of twelve projects to build a major steel project with a 12 MTPA capacity plant in Gadakunjanga near the port of Paradip.
A 19.2 MTPA steel project at Banarpal in Angul district was approved by the state government for construction by Jindal Steel Odisha last year, while a 24 MTPA project at Mahakalpada in Kendrapara was proposed by Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India Ltd. In Kalinganagar in Jajpur, the Beekay Utkal Steel Industries. builds a 2,245 MTPA plant. The remaining six projects will be completed as follows: three in Sundargarh district, one in each of the following districts: Dhenkanal, Jajapur and Jharsugida. In addition, the state government has given 12 steel projects the necessary approval for capacity development.
