Maharashtra's cabinet has approved a Rs 45,000 crore scheme to renew the state's entire electricity distribution network. The project consists of three parts: upgrading the distribution infrastructure, installing smart meters and digitizing the distribution system.
The state government will implement the project under the central government's Renewed Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), where 60% of the project costs will be borne by the center. The scheme will be carried out by two electricity distribution companies – MSEDCL and BEST – for Rs 39,602 crore and Rs 3,461 crore respectively.
