The state government has approached Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) for a proposal to merge remote villages within the KMC borders.
Rajesh Kshirsagar, former Shiv Sena MLA who is now at Prime Minister Eknath Shinde's camp, said: "The Prime Minister and Deputy CM Devendra Fadanvis is in favor of the proposal. The government will try to ensure that there is no opposition from the Randdorpen. The merger will certainly happen this time.”
Satej Patil, the guardian minister at the time of the by-election meeting for Kolhapur North, had stated that the merger would involve four to five villages. An earlier proposal for the consolidation of 18 villages and two industrial estates was made by the KMC. Ambewadi, Vandanage, Shiye, Shiroli, Nagao, Valivade-Gandhinagar villages, Shiroli MIDC and Gokul Shirgaon MIDC are likely to be excluded from the final plan by the state government. In addition, it is likely that Pachgaon, Morewadi, Kalamba, Uchgaon and Sarnobatwadi will be considered in the final plan.
The villages most likely to be abandoned are those on the western and northern suburbs of the city and across the Panchganga River. Geographical uniformity, which is necessary for efficient governance and service provision, is lacking in these areas. Due to the closely agricultural nature of these villages, farmers may vigorously resist inclusion in the KMC borders.
On the other hand, the villages along the eastern and southern flanks of the city are uniformly formed, densely populated and largely urbanized. Mostly, the local authorities in these villages were unable to meet the needs of the residents. These urbanized villages are completely dependent on the city, especially for transportation and water supply.
