The Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir will become a major energy hub in Northern India as it will generate nearly 6,000 megawatts (MW) of power upon completion of the ongoing energy projects, an official spokesman said. The excess power from Kishtwar will not only be used for other parts of the union territory, but will also be sold to other states, he said.
He said that the 1,000 MW Pakal Dul project, the 624 MW Kiru project, the 540 MW Kwar project and the 930 MW Kirthai project are all in close proximity to each other along with the 850 MW Ratle project revived as a joint venture between the Center. and the union territory.
The Pakal Dul HE project (1,000 MW) is under active construction after the river diversion is completed. The project will generate 3230 MW annually and is expected to be completed by July 2025, the spokesperson said.
He said Kiru HE Project (624 MW) is also under construction. The river diversion was recently completed and will generate 2,272 MW annually upon completion. The project is expected to be completed in July 2025.
Work on the Kwar Hydro Electric Project (540 MW) began in 2022 and the project will generate 1975 million units (MU) of power annually and is scheduled for completion in November 2026, the spokesman said.
