Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) is taking a wide range of measures to reduce CO2 emissions from its current and planned capacities, including establishing renewable energy capacity, said Managing Director Abhyuday Jindal.
During FY22, JSL reduced its carbon emissions by 3,100 metric tons and initiated a switch from a thermal energy-intensive production plant to renewable energy alternatives such as solar and wind, Jindal said in a press interview.
“If we continue, we will take proactive steps to decarbonise and reduce carbon emissions from our current and planned capabilities. The move is intended to support the government's mission of carbon neutrality,” he said.
In the field of renewable energy, JSL is looking for partners to set up 300MW of solar and wind capacities in states like Odisha, Haryana and Rajasthan, Jindal said, adding that talks with a few players are already underway. The investment will be made through joint venture/ventures that will be formed upon completion of the enthusiastic parties.
The company has also partnered with Hygenco India Pvt Ltd to set up a green hydrogen plant. The unit plant will help the company reduce its CO2 emissions by nearly 2,700 tons per year, Jindal said.
“We are the first and only stainless steel company in India to install a green hydrogen plant,” he said.
In addition, his company is working with EY India to consolidate ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) goals. JSL and EY will work to develop a roadmap for achieving decarbonisation and other environmental goals.
