With the supply of coal from the PEKB Chhattisgarh mine reportedly disrupted due to local unrest, the increased demand for electricity in Rajasthan is becoming even more difficult. The number of rakes received by the Rajasthan Vidhyut Utpadan Nigam (RVUN) has decreased by nine per day as a result of this disruption.
This shortage accounts for about 40% of the total coal received for power generation. Bhaskar A Sawant, Chief Secretary (Power) and Chairman of Discoms, has reportedly stated that due to supply disruptions, coal has been allocated through the center under a 'bridge link' scheme, but this coal has to be collected from the Mahanadi- cabbage fields (Odisha).
Due to the limited availability of rail rakes on this long stretch, many problems arise. To solve this problem it was decided to bring this coal from Paradip Port (Odisha) to the west coast and from there to Rajasthan by rail.
