Coal India Ltd said this week that its coal production increased 17.4% to 351.9 million tonnes (MT) in the April-October period of the current fiscal year. The company's coal production for the corresponding period of the last fiscal year was 299.6 tons, CIL said in a registration application.
Coal production by the 'Maharatna' firm increased to 52.9 tons in October, from 49.8 tons in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal year.
The state-owned company also said its coal purchase rose to 385.7 tons in April-October, from 364.4 tons in the same period a year ago.
In October, however, the decrease fell to 53.7 tons, from 56.5 tons in the same month of the previous financial year. The coal major gave no reason for the decline in the purchase.
Coal India accounts for more than 80 percent of domestic coal production. It will reach 1 billion tons of coal production by 2025-26, compared to the earlier timeline of 2023-24 in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi had previously said.
CIL's coal production in the current fiscal year is expected to be 700 MT and additional production of 200 MT is expected to come from other sources.
