Nxtra Data, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, has started construction of its new hyperscale data center in Kolkata. The company will invest Rs 6 billion in developing the largest data center in East India. It will serve the underserved markets of East and North East India along with the SAARC countries, meeting the growing needs of enterprises and global cloud players.
The 25 MW facility will be located in New Town, Kolkata and will be fully operational by 2024. The new center will source clean energy to run its activities. It will be Nxtra's first large-scale facility in Eastern India, in addition to its existing 12 major and 120 edge facilities across India. The new center will further strengthen Nxtra's position as the largest network of data centers in the country.
'Nxtra by Airtel' will invest more than Rs 50 billion over the next four years to triple its capacity to over 400 MW. The company has already invested and partnered with eight organizations to obtain more than 180,000 MWh of renewable energy. Nxtra aims for net zero in 2031.
“Nxtra and Airtel are delighted to partner with West Bengal in their digital-first economy agenda. We are investing heavily in green energy and our state-of-the-art, carrier-neutral, hyper-scale data center in Kolkata will run on renewable energy sources,” said Rajesh Tapadia, executive director and chief operating officer, Nxtra by Airtel.
