K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the chief minister of Telangana, inspects the construction of the Yadadri thermal power station. The project is likely to be commissioned in September next year.
According to reports, the 4,000 Megawatt power plants will be the largest thermal plant ever built for the public sector. The plant is being built in Damarcherla mandal in Nalgonda district at an estimated cost of Rs 299.92 billion. Once this project is completed, officials expect Telangana to be free of power shortages.
The TRS administration is eager to get the esteemed project up and running before the state parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for December 2023.
The contract for the construction of the supercritical power plant has been awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
There will be five units of 800 MW in the power plant. According to representatives of Telangana State Power Generation Corporation (TS Genco), the first unit will start production in December of the same year and the other two units in 2024.
Genco states that the project is actively being worked on. About 62% of the work has already been completed. In the first two units of Phase I, the completion rate is much higher.
This is the third thermal plant built since the establishment of Telangana State. In a record time of 46 months, Genco built the Kothagudem thermal power station with a capacity of 800 MW. The commissioning of this project took place in 2019. A 1080 MW Bhadradri plant was then built in Bhadradri Kothagudem district close to Bayyaram.
According to Genco officials, the National Green Tribunal's orders will not affect the construction project.
The NGT suspended the project's environmental permit last month, citing uncertainty over coal links and the project site's proximity to the Amrabad Tiger Reserve.
However, the NGT has given Genco nine months to have the project re-evaluated by the Expert Appraisal Committee on the said aspects and to receive a new approval from the union ministry of environment and forests. During this time, Genco may continue with the construction of the plant as long as the plant has not been installed and the project has not been commissioned.
