In 2022, the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has created 90 layouts including YSR Jagananna Colonies and MIG (middle-income group) layouts. This was significantly higher than the layouts the VMRDA has made over its 60-year history.
In 2022, the VMRDA developed 81 layouts among the Jagananna colonies alone, spread over about 5,000 acres, spending about $1.5 billion on basic infrastructure. Another 500 million will be spent by the VMRDA on advanced infrastructure in these one-cent layouts.
Dr. A Mallikarjuna, Visakhapatnam District Collector and VMRDA Capital Commissioner, stated that the 81 Jagananna subdivisions have provided housing for nearly 1.47 lakh homeless people in the district.
“The VMRDA has started the development of 9 MIG layouts in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Anakapalli districts. Approximately 3,370 lots will be offered in these 9 layouts spread over 450 hectares.
In total, the 90 layouts of the VMRDA designed and implemented by 2022 are expected to house nearly 1.5 lakh people. The VMRDA has already spent Rs. 1.5 billion for the Jagananna Colonies project. Another 500 million will be spent on advanced infrastructure such as roads and parks.
The VMRDA's engineering, planning, estate and other wings worked around the clock to complete the Jagananna colonies. In terms of accommodation, the employees and civil servants of the VMRDA have had a busy year. “The VMRDA has succeeded in fulfilling the government's goals and aspirations to provide housing for the poor,” said Mallikarjuna.
