PSP Projects Ltd (PPL), an Ahmedabad-based company, has been awarded a Rs 13.44 billion contract for the construction of the twin towers that will house the administrative and other departments of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).
The standing committee approved the design for the 27-storey buildings, which will be the tallest in South Gujarat.
The former Sub Jail property on Ring Road, where the towers would be built, is owned by the state government and has a built area of ββ2.20 lakh square metres. It is worth noting that the groundbreaking ceremony for the new SMC administrative building was conducted in 2014 by then Prime Minister Anandiben Patel.
Due to the structural design being revised, the project went through several stages and was delayed. Each skyscraper will be 105.3 meters high and will have four underground parking spaces with a capacity of 4,400 vehicles.
State and central government offices would be housed in Tower B, while SMC offices of 35 different departments would be housed in Tower A. In addition to the offices of elected members, the buildings will include a civic center, library, and security and surveillance room.
There will be 36 elevators, a boardroom with 200 seats, a committee room with 100 seats and six committee rooms, each with a capacity of 35 people. A solar power plant will be installed on the roof. The lower patio floor will be used by staff for a variety of recreational pursuits.
Ketan Desai, SMC City Engineer Special Cell said, βThe value of space allocated for these offices to the government department will be per square meter depending on the formula of construction cost, operation and maintenance cost and land value. We are working on this formula, but there may be several changes in the future. This project will be completed in three years, not counting the monsoon season. The costs are borne by SMC, the state government and the central government.β
Instead of the earlier proposal to have SMC offices in both towers so that people can do their work in one location, Prime Minister Narendra Modi insisted that offices of different departments of the state and central government be located in the buildings record.
PSP will also receive a five-year operation and maintenance contract for the twin towers. The company has completed numerous government projects including the rehabilitation of the Gujarat Assembly building in Gandhinagar, the CG Road Redevelopment and the Sabarmati Riverfront. With a contract worth Rs 1,575 crore, it is currently building the Surat Diamond Bourse near Khajod.
