With its innovative automatic 2D grade control for small rail loaders, Topcon, known for its GPS grading systems for heavy equipment, has entered the compact market.
The controls in the cab of the CTL are directly connected to the 2D-MC system, which works with a mounting of the box sheet. A common rotating laser on the job site is compatible with the outer masts attached to the crate blade.
The operator adjusts the ramp with a tablet mounted in the cab. The system uses a CAN bus connection. "It goes right into the brain of the equipment," Brandon Jaynes, the company's spokesman, said at the Topcon booth at World of Concrete. "You can get this up and running in about 15 minutes. It's an affordable entry price for medium-sized contractors who want to do more with what they have."
Big brands of compact track loaders weighing at least 8,000 pounds are compatible with 2D-MC technology. Finishing sorting for things like home pads, drainage, roadside access rights, ramp work, sidewalk gradation, road base replacement, parking lots, sports fields, landscaping, interior work, and concrete site preparation are all things it can do.
It is meant to be precise and more effective. To adjust the blade, the operator no longer has to get in and out of the cab. "Now they set that figure, go almost at full speed depending on what they're pushing through, and the grade they're asking the system to provide is the grade they're getting," said Oscar Cantú, Topcon construction content manager.
Customers are often attracted to a product for a specific reason, he continues, but over time, they learn that they can handle more challenging tasks.
"You put a battery in a rotating laser, put it on a tripod," he explains, "go out with a level bar that measures the rotating laser, get into the cabin, set your incline — you go. The learning curve is pretty low."
The monitor in the system's cabin is an Android tablet built to withstand the harsh conditions of a construction site. Cant stated that the controls were purposefully kept simple, with few options to choose from.
