The tallest escalators in India will be built at metro 3's International Airport Terminal (T2) station.
The eight escalators will be 19.15 metres long, breaking the current national record of 15.6 metres set at the janakpuri west station of the Delhi Metro. They will also reclaim Mumbai's title as the city with the highest escalators in the country, which it previously possessed thanks to T2's 11.6-metre-high pair.
The highest escalators in the world, each 69 meters, can be found in three metro stations of the Russian Saint Petersburg Metro. The central mid-level escalator in Hong Kong is the world's highest escalator system. It is 135 meters high and spans more than 800 meters, with 20 escalators and three inclined travelators.
"In total, we are installing 14 escalators at the CSMIA T-2 station of the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz underground corridor," an MMRC spokesperson said. "A 250-ton crane is used to lower the 8 escalators into tight spaces."
