While India has seen an influx of advanced paving and compaction equipment, introducing some more equipment and features would improve the quality of constructed roads. CW presents a wish list:
More than eight-lane lanes are proposed, but pavers with such a large width are unavailable or too expensive, says Atasi Das, Assistant Vice President, GR Infraprojects. "That's why there will be lane-by-lane paving, which slows down the work. Echelon pavement is an option, but it requires more vowels."
Das proposes to make a more scientific selection of a roll weight and type based on the soil type embankment, characterized by the plasticity index (PI). She says this would mean using the relevant IRC code (IRC: SP: 97-2013). For example, "where the PI is 15 and above, a sheep foot compactor should be used; for a PI value of 10 to 15, a roller of 14 tonnes must be used; for a PI value between 6 and 10, an 8-10 roller; and for a PI value between 0 and 6, a static 3-wheel 8-10 roller combined with 8-10 vibrating roller for regular fits."
