On 30 October, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched developmental projects worth Rs 5,800 crore in Gujarat across multiple sectors such as rail, road, water and irrigation.
These launched projects include the new Bhandu-New Sanand(N) section of the western dedicated freight corridor (WDFC), doubling of the Viramgam-Samakhiali rail line, inauguration of Katosan Road-Bechraji-Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL siding) rail project, and a project for recharge of various village lakes of Vijapur and Mansa taluka of Mehsana and Gandhinagar districts. This 77-km section of the WDFC will help accelerate the transport of goods from ports and manufacturing hubs in the region.
The new section of DFC has enhanced connectivity with major ports in Gujarat like Pipavav, Porbandar, and Jamnagar with Eastern and Northern India for faster movement of Exim traffic and reduced transit time. Earlier, sixty goods trains which used the passenger rail routes on this section have been shifted to the freight corridor, leading to more rapid movement of passenger trains. The total project cost of this section is about Rs 3,184 crore.
Besides, PM Modi also inaugurated the Valasana barrage on the Sabarmati river in Mehsana, and the Dharoi Dam based Palanpur lifeline project, apart from launching schemes for provisioning of drinking water in Palanpur, and Banaskantha. To improve water supply and irrigation in northern Gujarat, six barrages are being built on river Sabarmati to provide maximum benefits to farmers in the region.
In addition, the government is also working to develop the agriculture sector as well as the industrial sector of north Gujarat. New railway projects and the upcoming DFC between Mehsana and Ahmedabad will bolster the connectivity in the region, especially linkages to major ports in Pipavav, Porbandar, and Jamnagar.
