The Gulbarga, Karnataka-based cement producer will consume and dispose of all the waste collected and handed over to it from Goa, Sequeira explained. As per the MoU, there will be no payments from either side, although Goa will bear the cost of transporting the plastic to the Wadi plant, where it will be used as alternative fuel to fire the cement kiln.
The MOU is initially for a period of three years and comes into force with immediate effect, marking the first time that the state science and environment ministry has worked out a solution to the disposal of plastic waste in the state.
The minister added that all the village panchayats and municipal bodies will be asked to collect the plastic, rubber and thermacol and hand it over to a government appointed agency who would transport it further.
