Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has commenced work on the second tunnel boring machine (TBM) of Line-7A, further expanding the operational Red Line-M7 Andheri (East) to Dahisar (East). The TBM (T-60) is expected to complete its initial drive within a month and complete the final drive by June 2024.
Line 7A is designed to connect Andheri (East) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The 7A corridor runs partially elevated and parallel to Western Express Highway (WEH) and Sahar elevated road. The initial drive of the TBM is estimated to be completed within a month, and the final drive is expected to be completed by June 2024.
The entire tunnelling project is anticipated to be concluded by 2024. The tunnelling work is carried out at a depth of 12 mtrs. to 28 mtrs. The 3.42-km-long Metro 7A, of which, about 2.49 km, is an underground ground stretch. There will be two stations on this corridor (Airport Colony and T2 airport). MMRDA, which has completed over 15 percent of the work on this project, began tunnelling on 01 September, 2023.
MMRDA used the micro tunnelling method to divert an underground sewer line, which was infringing with the tunnel alignment of Metro 7A. The diversion was commissioned on 30 January, 2023. This new line seamlessly connects to CSMIA, providing direct connectivity to the airport and also to the Mira Bhayandar (Metro-9) area and the Western suburbs (Metro-2A and 7).
The CSMIA underground station of Metro-7A and the CSMIA underground station of Metro-3 are parallel and connected at the concourse level, providing seamless connectivity between paid-to-paid and unpaid-to-unpaid areas.
