The Karnataka government has initiated the search for land to develop a second airport in Bengaluru to meet the future demands of the rapidly growing metropolis and to support the development of an industrial ecosystem beyond the city limits.
State Infrastructure Development Department (IDD) Minister MB Patil chaired a meeting on June 20, 2024, to discuss the project. During the meeting, the Minister directed officials to prepare and submit a feasibility report for the proposed airport.
Kempegowda International Airport handled 37.5 million passengers and over one lakh tonne of cargo last year. The current airport is expected to reach its maximum passenger handling capacity by 2033, underscoring the need for a second airport to accommodate future growth.
