Amidst India’s rapidly developing infrastructure and the growing demand for green energy solutions, Godrej & Boyce has once again put itself at the forefront with its latest innovation. The group’s material handling business has announced the launch of Lithium-Ion Battery Powered Forklifts, featuring an indigenously developed Battery Management System (BMS). This is the first-of-its-kind offering from an Indian company. The new solution addresses a pressing need in India’s material handling sector by providing a safe and self-sufficient Lithium-Ion battery system.
The benefits of Lithium-Ion technology are vast and transformative as it offers more than 4 times longer battery life compared to conventional lead-acid batteries. Lithium-Ion batteries offer 5000 charge cycles as opposed to 1200 charge cycles for lead-acid batteries, reducing long-term investment. It allows for recharging, zero emissions during charging, and reduces maintenance requirements. It takes just 2.5 hours for Lithium-ion batteries to charge from 20% to 80%, compared to 6 hours for lead-acid, while consuming 30% less power. Lithium-ion batteries offer up to 15% longer runtime for 2 and 3 tonne forklifts. The modular design also allows for scalability. Godrej & Boyce plans to extend this technology to other material handling equipment. Industries that will benefit include automotive, FMCG, consumer durables, retail including e-commerce, pharmaceuticals and other key manufacturing sectors.
Anil Verma, Executive Director and CEO, Godrej & Boyce, part of the Godrej Enterprises Group, said: “The logistics sector in India is at a critical juncture, witnessing robust growth driven by infrastructure developments in sectors such as automotive, FMCG, consumer durables, retail including e-commerce and pharmaceuticals, driven by growing consumer demand at Godrej & Boyce.” We are committed to our ‘Make in India’ strategy, which plays a vital role in driving this growth. Our focus on integrating advanced technology-based solutions remains a key priority, to address the complex challenges of modern supply chains. These innovations are critical to improving operational efficiency and ensuring the continuous evolution of the sector. The future of Indian logistics will be defined by this commitment to nation building and innovation, ensuring a more resilient and adaptable industry. Anil Lingayat, Executive Vice President and Business Head, Material Handling, Godrej & Boyce, part of the Godrej Enterprises Group, said, “We are delighted to introduce our lithium-ion battery powered forklifts featuring indigenously developed batteries. This launch underscores our commitment to ‘Make in India’ and building self-reliance capabilities in critical technologies for the material handling industry. Leveraging our engineering expertise, we have created a solution that improves safety and enhances performance. We believe this is the beginning of a transformational journey that will revolutionize material handling and inspire industries across the country to reimagine what is possible when we commit to self-sufficiency.”
Developed in partnership with Log9 Materials, the new battery systems integrate lithium-ion cells with 30% local production with a proprietary Battery Management System (BMS) that is fully designed and manufactured in India. The company has set a target of 100% cell localization by next year.
Traditionally, the Indian market has been heavily reliant on imported batteries and BMS, primarily of Chinese origin. Localization of this technology underscores the company’s unwavering commitment to its ‘Make in India’ vision and its dedication to fostering a resilient local supply chain.
