A Powerscreen PT400X Jaw Crusher, 1000 Maxtrak Cone Crusher and Chieftain 1700 Screen were pressed into service to work on a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project near Demchok, close to the China border, in Umling La, Leh Ladakh (UT). Situated at an altitude of 19,024 feet, the project is located on the world’s highest motorable pass and aims to produce road construction materials such as Granular Sub Base (GSB), Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) and Aggregates (5mm, 10mm, 20mm).
The high altitude of the site presented significant challenges due to low oxygen levels and temperatures, which dropped to -23°C during the project. In addition, the terrain was hilly with sharp bends and no usable roads, which made it difficult to transport and install equipment on site.
Powerscreen equipment is uniquely suited and reliable in extreme climatic conditions due to its robust engineering and advanced technology, reinforced by rigorous testing and quality materials to withstand harsh conditions, including high altitude conditions. In addition, the innovative design of Powerscreen equipment allows for disassembly and reassembly, making transportation and installation in rough, inaccessible terrain easier. To navigate the rough terrain, the service team expertly disassembled the Powerscreen equipment for transportation and reassembled it on site. Despite the extreme conditions, the service team completed installation and commissioning in 15 days.
The Powerscreen PT400X Jaw Crusher is set up as the primary crusher and takes large and variable size input material for feeding into the 1000 Maxtrak Cone Crusher, which utilizes Automax® crusher technology to deliver high volumes of excellently formed, consistent product. This material is then screened by the Chieftain 1700 Screen to separate the product into its various sizes.
The successful deployment of Powerscreen equipment in Umling La has enabled the BRO to produce the necessary materials for their road project, ensuring the continuation of vital infrastructure development in the region. The infrastructure will improve access to remote villages, making it easier for residents to travel for medical care, education and other essential services. The road will also facilitate the delivery of goods and services, contributing to the overall socio-economic development of the region. The improved connectivity will also boost local businesses and tourism, with many tourists attracted by the world’s highest motorable road, providing new income opportunities for locals through homestays, guided tours and local crafts.
