Shyam Metalics enhances coastal infrastructure with stainless steel rebars: A step towards Make in India

Shyam Metalics and Energy has announced the launch of its stainless-steel rebar production, specifically targeting the coastal regions. This initiative comes as a part of Shyam Metalics’ commitment to supporting the Government of India’s vision of strengthening coastal infrastructure and promoting the ‘Make in India’ program by using high-quality, domestically produced materials to meet the nation’s infrastructure sector’s growing demand.

The announcement aligns with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ recent circular promoting the use of stainless steel rebars, which are known for their corrosion resistance and durability, especially in areas exposed to saltwater, humidity, and other harsh environmental conditions. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has further emphasized the importance of rust-resistant materials in coastal areas, calling for the mandatory use of stainless steel rebars within 30 kilometres of the coast to increase the lifespan of essential construction projects like roads and bridges.

Shyam Metalics has long recognized the advantages of stainless steel (SS) rebars over traditional mild steel (MS) thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) bars. SS rebars offer enhanced corrosion resistance, longer durability, and minimal maintenance, making them the ideal choice for infrastructure projects in harsh coastal environments. The use of stainless steel rebars can significantly reduce maintenance costs and increase the service life of infrastructure exposed to harsh conditions, such as bridges, high-rise buildings, ports, and railway projects. SMEL’s product range includes TMT bars, ferroalloys, sponge iron, billets, structural steel, pipes, and pellets, all intended for construction projects, from residential to commercial and infrastructure development.

Commenting on the expansion, Aneesh Mishra, associate president of sales & marketing at Shyam Metalics stated, “We are honoured to support the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative by providing sustainable and reliable solutions that enhance the longevity of India’s coastal infrastructure. Our stainless steel rebars will improve the durability of critical projects such as bridges, ports, and high-rise buildings, contributing to reduced maintenance costs and environmental impact. We believe that incorporating SS rebars will shape the future of sustainable construction in India, and we encourage stakeholders to adopt this innovative material for the long-term success of infrastructure projects.”

The lifecycle cost of reinforced bars shows that while mild steel (MS) rebars, with a lifespan of around 30 years, have a lower upfront cost, they incur higher long-term expenses due to frequent maintenance and replacement, especially in corrosive environments, whereas stainless steel (SS) rebars, with a lifespan of 80-100 years, offer a higher initial investment but significantly reduce long-term costs through enhanced durability, corrosion resistance, and minimal maintenance requirements.

Divyansh Agarwal, business development & strategy, Shyam Metalics, stated, “Our stainless steel rebars offer up to ten times more corrosion resistance than conventional TMT bars, significantly extending the lifespan of critical infrastructure such as bridges and ports. This marks a vital step in enhancing India’s coastal infrastructure while supporting the country’s modernization goals.”

The launch of stainless steel rebars by Shyam Metalics signifies a significant advancement in fortifying India’s coastal infrastructure with materials that offer superior performance in corrosive environments. Conventional MS TMT bars, susceptible to rapid corrosion in coastal regions, frequently result in elevated maintenance costs and diminished lifespans for structures. In contrast, Shyam Metalics’ SS rebars present up to ten times more corrosion resistance, substantially extending the lifespan of critical infrastructure such as bridges, ports, and high-rise buildings.

With the government’s emphasis on rust-resistant materials, especially in coastal areas, Shyam Metalics is well-equipped to fulfil the increasing need for sustainable construction solutions. The company’s commitment to providing high-quality, corrosion-resistant materials perfectly aligns with India’s infrastructure modernization objectives and the Make in India initiative, laying the groundwork for more durable and long-lasting coastal infrastructure.
