A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) from Nigeria lost Rs 30.6 million after he was lured by a real estate company that promised to provide him with land in Kondapur, where a popular Tollywood hero was acting as a brand ambassador. After collecting the payment, the accused promised to register the property but ended up cheating the businessman by making him wait at the sub-registrar’s office without turning up.
The victim approached the Cyberabad police and filed a criminal case against the owner of the real estate company. The complainant was looking for land with potential for appreciation during his visit to India in 2021. After coming across advertisements on social media featuring the hero, he contacted the company representatives who were showcasing various projects in Ranga Reddy district and nearby areas.
He decided to purchase 2,100 square yards in Kokapet and paid Rs. 30.6 million, with an agreement that the registration would be done within a year. Later, the complainant found that the plots sold to him were already registered in the names of other clients. When he confronted the owner, the latter assured him that he would convince the two clients to cancel their sale deeds, which would facilitate the registration of the promised plot. He also assured that the registration would be completed at the office of the sub-registrar after the outstanding amounts were paid.
The victim paid the outstanding amounts and was shown the sale deeds for registration in his name. He was directed to go to the SRO office to complete the remaining formalities. As agreed, he went to the SRO, hoping that the registration would be completed, but the owner did not turn up. Cyberabad police reported that when the victim repeatedly tried to contact the accused, he evaded all meetings. Consequently, the police registered a criminal case against him on charges of conspiracy, cheating and breach of trust.
