"Out of 239 mines in CIL, which existed prior to 1994, including 48 open cast mines, 170 underground mines and 21 combined mines were found to be working without environmental clearance," the CAG said in a report on corporate social responsibility of the company.
A senior official from corporate planning department at Coal India said these mines are very old and they did not require environmental clearance when operations began, but Coal India had taken up the matter with the government.
