CAG: Coal India laggs in corporate social responsibility, effluent treatment

Kolkata : Coal India is running 191 mines without any environmental clearance, the Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) said in a report on the company, which says delays in green clearances has severely hit its output.

"Out of 239 mines in CIL, which existed prior to 1994, including 48 open cast mines, 170 underground mines and 21 combined mines were found to be working without environmental clearance," the CAG said in a report on corporate social responsibility of the company.

A senior official from corporate planning department at Coal India said these mines are very old and they did not require environmental clearance when operations began, but Coal India had taken up the matter with the government.
