Estimates are that 84 percent of the iron and steel used in foundries is recycled scrap. Recycling steel requires 56 percent less energy than producing steel from iron ore, and reduces Co2 emissions by up to 58 percent. Recycling also reduces the need for mining virgin ore. Thus roughly 37% of the world's steel output originates from scrap iron and steel. The energy saved from using recycled steel scrap amounts to approx. 75% of the energy that would have been spent to generate the steel from primary mineral raw materials and the CO2 emissions are reduced by 58%.
